2.4 billion people live without improved sanitation, and one in ten have no choice but to defecate in the open. Globally, poor sanitation contributes to a million child deaths each year from diarrheal
disease, due primarily to untreated waste water. Novel waste treatment systems are needed to improve public health and quality of life among people in developing nations.
