Biomass Controls at the North American Biochar Conference 2026

Biomass Controls PBC will be at the North American Biochar Conference 2026 in New Orleans, November 16–18, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Jeffrey Hallowell, Executive Chair, will speak on "From producer data to independent LCI review: building trust in biochar carbon claims." The conference is hosted by the American Biochar Institute (ABI) in partnership with the U.S. Biochar Coalition.

The talk shares lessons from preparing commercial biochar production data for independent life cycle inventory (LCI) review. Biochar markets are scaling faster than the production data behind their environmental claims, and those data are often inconsistent across feedstocks, technologies, and system boundaries. The session covers what makes a producer dataset reviewable and comparable: a defined technology and feedstock scope, measured plant data separated from literature proxies and stated assumptions, closed mass and energy balances, documented post-control air emissions, and biochar properties (carbon content, ash, H/C and O/C ratios, nutrients and metals, surface area, pH, bulk density) carried into the product record. It also makes the case for keeping production-stage data distinct from downstream carbon storage and permanence accounting, which belong in application and carbon-accounting models, and it closes with a proposed pathway toward technology-neutral, reviewable LCI infrastructure for the North American biochar industry.

The session continues a thread from NABC 2025, where Hallowell spoke on how biochar projects fit supply-chain climate goals. The 2026 talk turns to the production data underneath those claims.
